The Greater New Haven Help Alliance

Summer Youth Initiative

New Haven Help Alliance Youth Initiative program provides High School age students (14-17) an opportunity to be productively occupied during the summer and facilitates their personal holistic growth into becoming everything that God intends. This experience is more than a summer activity with employment but an experience that seeks to develop leadership skills along with practical application providing general and specific exposure in order to encourage and support youth as emerging leaders within our communities.

The Youth Initiative is a program designed to assist in the continuous development of youth (14-17) as productive and contributing members of their community. The Initiative is structured to enhance the youth’s self-worth and to enable them to develop the gifts and talents they possessed. They are also encouraged to share those gifts and talents in a way they will be beneficial to their local community as well as themselves and their God. In doing so, we believe that the image of God that is upon every person would come alive in them and commission them to change the culture of violence, crime, and disorder that permeates our communities.

The New Haven Help Alliance Youth Initiative focuses on leadership and the transference of these skills to the everyday life of our youth as they interact among their peers and in the community. Throughout the 2008-2009 school year our Youth Initiative group met monthly to work on leadership skills and prepare and plan for a July mission’s trip to the country of Trinidad and Tobago. In July, eight of our youth accompanied by nine adults spent a week in community service and ministry in Trinidad. Our youth had first hand experienced exercising and implementing the skills needed to lead across racial, cultural, economic, and social barriers. Upon return the eight youth participated in the summer portion of NHHA Youth Initiative program.

The participants in the summer portion are required to take part in the morning sessions in order to participate in the paid afternoon work sessions. The morning sessions include developmental programming to enhance leadership in the area of vision casting, community development, financial planning, team building, civic responsibility and diversity. The morning sessions consists of guest speakers and interactive hands on training sessions. Youth , 15 and older are then placed in a job located in the community where they are able to practice what they have learned in an environment of productivity, teamwork and cooperation. Our 14 year olds remained on site this year and participated in added work ethic/character building training that culminated in a dramatic presentation to the rest of the participants in Youth Initiative
